Mount Aklim Trekking Guide | Hidden Peaks of Morocco’s Anti-Atlas

Massin Ait Baha - Tata visite

Mount Aklim (2,531 m) is one of the highest peaks in Morocco’s Anti-Atlas Mountains, yet it remains largely unknown to international travelers. Located at 30.123581, -8.284200, this remote mountain offers an authentic trekking experience far from mass tourism, ideal for hikers from Europe and North America looking for raw landscapes and cultural immersion.

From the summit, the views are breathtaking. On clear days, hikers can see the High Atlas Mountains, often snow-covered in winter, as well as  Siroua Mountain rising in the distance. The contrast between the rugged, rocky terrain and the green patches around small villages and water sources creates a striking and memorable landscape.

What to Expect on the Trail

The Anti-Atlas is known for its dry, mineral landscapes, wide valleys, and traditional Amazigh villages. Around Mount Aklim, the terrain is mostly rocky, but life thrives wherever water is present. Terraced fields, small gardens, and olive groves appear unexpectedly, offering insight into local rural life that has changed little over generations.

Tourism in this region is minimal, making it perfect for travelers who value silence, solitude, and connection with nature. Hiring a local guide from Igherm is highly recommended, both for safety and for a deeper understanding of the region’s culture and history.

How to Reach Mount Aklim

There are two main trekking options:

  • Multi-day trek from Igherm (with a guide), suitable for experienced hikers.

  • Day hike from the village of Tagdacht, located east of Mount Aklim.

The ascent from Tagdacht (30.094265, -8.309848) takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. Travelers should be aware that several villages in Morocco share the name “Tagdacht”, so confirming the exact location in advance is essential.
